Strangers On Planes

Most adults don't like to converse with their seat buddy, but I find children almost always do! So, if there is an opportunity to sit with a child, I will take it. During some recent travels, I met a lovely 8 year old Jewish girl named Leigh. We talked about how much we had in common. We both have curly hair, like sci-fi movies, and we are both dancers (she's an ice dancer, I'm a ballroom dancer). Our favorite stories from the holy scriptures are Moses and the Exodus, and Noah and the Ark. Between the two of us, we could name all the plagues on Egypt and thought the worst one surely was blood in the water.

As we looked out the plane window seeing blue wave-like clouds below us, it looked like we were floating instead of flying. We then imagined that we were on the Ark and tried to figure out where to put all the animals. We both like to drink tomato juice when we fly, so when the stewardess served our tomato juice on Star Wars movie napkins and the beverage of choice looked like bloody water we both had a good laugh.

Leigh lives in Rochester, MN where hundreds of thousands of people travel to Mayo clinic where her dad works as a urologist. She thought places like Hospitality Houses were wonderful for the people that her daddy sees in his office. As we parted, I shared my recipe for snow ice cream, which she has never eaten (checkout the recipe below).

Encounters like these always remind me of one of my favorite verses, Hebrews 13:2. As so many of us are traveling this holiday season, remember to show hospitality in your interactions with others. Whether its a child on a plane, or a gas station attendant on your family road trip, do not neglect to show hospitality.

Snow Ice Cream Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (any kind)

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 pinch salt

  • 8 cups clean snow (avoid the yellow snow!)

  • Optional, but highly suggested: chocolate syrup and sprinkles.

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk milk, sugar, vanilla and salt together until combined. Go gather your fresh clean snow, and immediately stir it into the milk mixture until you reach a fluffy consistency. It melts quickly, so don’t wait long before serving to your favorite humans.

  2. Top with sprinkles and other toppings of your choice!

  3. Enjoy!
